Fuel consumption – tests and reality

The actual fuel consumption in the car and the declared consumption by the manufacturer are usually two different values. Why is this happening?

Test results fuel consumption, which are presented in information folders, Car magazines and brochures have been performed in an unchanging manner for over thirty years. Examination system fuel consumption it was developed in the early eighties of the last century and has practically not changed to this day.

It looks like, that the car was tested for fuel consumption he enters a special laboratory and here, in a closed room, he is tested while driving on special inline skates. The laboratory is nothing more than a chassis dynamometer also used to measure engine power.

As you can imagine, driving in such conditions has little to do with driving on the road, in the open, in various weather conditions.

When for example car it is tested in the urban driving cycle, i.e. according to the 98/69/EC standard, its maximum speed does not exceed 50 km/h, while the average traffic in this measurement is within twenty kilometers per hour. This results in a very optimistic urban fuel consumption that is practically impossible to confirm under normal driving conditions in built-up areas.
