W 1897 r. car production began in the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. W 1896 r. through the textile manufacturer Theodor von Liebieg from Reichenberg (today's Liberec) Wagons factory in Koprzywnica - Nesselsdorfer Wagenbaufabrik - bought a one-cylinder Benz vehicle and a 2-cylinder engine, on the basis of which the first own car of this company, type Präsident, was created. Benz flat engine, 2-cylinder with displacement 2,75 I, he developed constant power 5,2 kW (7 KM), by 600 RPM. Präsident car anus in 1898 r. a trip from Koprzywnica in Moravia (former name - Nesselsdorf) to Vienna, where the existence was, with average speed 22,6 km/h. Since then, the car production era began in Koprzywnica. Further models appeared, such as: Vice President, Wien, Meteor, Aufhof, Spitzbub and the like.

At the same time, the first sports successes were achieved. Baron Liebieg won in 1899 r. on the racetrack in Vienna, a year later he won a difficult mountain race in Nice.

W 1914 r. the company equipped its cars with all-wheel brakes, which was unusual before the First World War.

After World War I, U-types with an engine of power were tried out 48,1 kW (65 KM) and brakes on four wheels in the Tatras. After excellent results obtained in Tatra conditions, the cars of the Nesselsdorfer Wagenbaufabrik company received the name Tatra, and the factory was renamed Koprivnicka Vozovka. A new plant was built at the same time, from which the famous type of Tatra emerged 11, with a central tubular frame, articulated rear axle and an air-cooled engine with power 9 kW (12 KM). It was a corporate concept up to 1934 r "when the last car of the brand was produced.

In the 1930s, Tatra gained popularity with a model 77 with air-cooled 8-cylinder engine and aerodynamic body. The rear engine started the era, which the company continued with types 87 i 97.
