Murphy became the first American there, in a driving American Duesenberg car, who won the European Grand Prix races. Then you had to wait until 39 years, for Phil Hill to win the Italian Grand Prix. Murphy's big season is one year 1922, in which he won the Fresno competition 150, Northbay 100, Indianapolis i Beverly Hills 250. It was in that year that he became the US champion.
