Ford has an interesting proposition for those, who are looking for a car that is more family-friendly and more functional than four-door limousines or five-door hatchbacks. Ford's offer includes station wagon models, different generations and segments, clearly different prices, equipment and prestige. Thanks to this, it meets the tastes of a wide audience with a diversified content of wallets.
The Escort Kombi is the cheapest. Escort entered the market in 1968 r., but its last, the fourth generation has nothing to do with the ancestor. The shape of the Escort was given in the beginning 1995 r., and two years later it underwent a minor modernization. In the estate version it has a large luggage compartment, finished on the sides with good quality plastic, and a felt carpet on the floor. Small wheel arches slightly limit the width of the load space. It can be further enlarged by unfolding the rear seat. The seat is fully raised, the backrests are divided asymmetrically. After unfolding the rear seat, we get a flat floor, running at the height of the loading edge. There is a spare wheel under the floor, around which there is a lot of free space, but without carpets. You can put flat items there, however, you need to take care, so that they do not knock on the plate. There is one small storage compartment on the side of the trunk, in which a fire extinguisher is hidden. The grille separating the cargo compartment from the passenger compartment can be easily removed, because the mounting screws are equipped with knobs. Luggage is hidden from the eyes of the prying eyes by a convenient blind. The inclination of the rear window is not too large and does not significantly limit the space above the glass line.
Unlike the Escort, the Focus model is a completely different design. He made his debut at the Geneva show in 1998 r. After releases 3- and a 4-door have also been introduced
combi, one of the most comprehensive in its class. The trunk has an impressive capacity and is finely finished with velor linings on the floor and sidewalls. The very small wheel arches take up very little load space. The rear seat folds out as in the Escort. The seat is fully raised, the backrest is divided asymmetrically. When the rear bench seat is folded down, the loading sill floor level remains completely flat. Only the spare wheel was placed under it, not foreseeing any hiding place. Lockable compartments are located on the side walls of the luggage compartment. They do have a large capacity, but only flat objects will fit in them. As in Escort, transported items can be covered with a roller blind that is convenient to use, and not too much inclination of the rear window allows quite effective use of the space above the glass line. Thanks to the knobs on the screws, it is also easy to remove the grille located between the luggage compartment and the passenger compartment.
Mondeo Kombi is the largest car with this type of body in the Ford offer, but his trunk is only about 20 dm3 greater than in the Focus. This is mainly because of the fact, that he is lower. However, in terms of length and width, it looks impressive. Here, too, we are dealing with one of the largest station wagons in the class (favorable price-performance ratio). Mondeo appeared in 1992 r., and after three years of production, it underwent the first major modernization. The ST version deserves attention 200, put on sale. It's a sports car, Also produced with a station wagon, it can satisfy even very demanding lovers of dynamic driving. W ST 200 not only the engine's capabilities and performance are impressive, but also an excellent chassis with elements of the typical sporty Cougar.
For the boot trim, similar to the Focus, high-quality velor carpets were used. The focus also resembles a roller shutter, lack of storage under the floor (only spare wheel) and the knobs on the protective grating screws (easy disassembly). However, the rear seat folds out differently. The seat remains stationary, and only the asymmetrically divided backrest can be tilted. However, as in other Ford estate cars, the floor, after folding the rear bench, remains flat and runs at the level of the lower edge of the loading hatch.. The rear window tilt is greater than in the compact models, which significantly reduces the possibility of full use of the enlarged luggage space.
